Fight Evil, Read Books.

So sayeth the amplifier of The Remus Lupins. This is a one man wizard rock band, and the one man is my friend Alex.

Alex as the Remus Lupins was recently the recipient of the following Wizard Rock People's Choice Awards:

Best Male Vocals
Best Album of 2006 (Spells From A Broken Wand)
Best Solo Artist
Band of the Year
Best Holiday Song of 2006 (Alone on Valentine's Day)
Best Album Art (This one went to our friend Brandon)

And he won an honorary t-shirt.

Let's back up for a moment just in case you think you're halucinating. Yes I'm currently writing a blog about my friend who is a one man band that sings about Harry Potter.
Now that we've gotten that part out of the way back to it.

Wizard Rock is now a like legitimate genre, with it's own wikipedia entry and everything:

Wizard rock is a musical movement dating from 2002 that consists of a number of bands formed by young musicians playing songs about J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter literary phenomenon. The lyrics are usually humorous and simple, and many bands write songs from the point of view of a particular character in the books, usually the character who features in the band's name. If they are performing live, they may also cosplay that character. Though most fans of the music are previous fans of Harry Potter, some bands have attracted listeners outside of the Harry Potter fanbase. Wizard rock has recently evolved to become deeper and more refined.

In contrast to mainstream bands like Led Zeppelin that have some songs incorporating literary references (notably The Lord of the Rings) among a wider repertoire of music, the majority of wizard rock bands such as Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, The Remus Lupins, The Parselmouths, The Moaning Myrtles, The Whomping Willows, The Hungarian Horntails, and The Cruciatus Curse take their inspiration entirely from the Harry Potter universe.

Yup, there's a feature length documentary being made about the genre as well. And recently Alex was mentioned in TIME magazine. There's a big following for this, at least more than one might expect. He's toured throughout the country and from what I understand is known as a very well received artist within this community.

In July my roommate and I are going to be at our local Border's at midnight for the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, we've both reserved copies.

So that's food for thought, I took that photo at his show on Sunday March 4, 2007 at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood. If you want to see the rest of the photos from that show you can click here.
